Maddie Says Hello!MADDIE UPDATE:This update is months in the making, but we are thrilled to be able to share it with you: Maddie is now walking on her own four hooves – BAREFOOT. That’s right – no shoes, no pads, no epoxy. Just 100% strong, solid Maddie hoof! In the summer, our amazing farrier, Frank, suggested to us that we pull Maddie’s shoes – he adamantly believed that without them, her hoof could actually grow, flex, and spread out more, resulting in a stronger, healthier foot. We were hesitant – Maddie’s feet were so delicate and so sensitive from all of her trauma, and we’d been protecting them as they grew with special shoes, pads, and fillers. But we trusted him completely, and agreed to give it a shot. He warned us that she’d be sore at first, and she was – we kept her in her stall and only turned her out in the soft arena for the first week or two while we watched her closely to ensure that she wasn’t in excessive pain. Soon, we were able to turn her out in the flat pasture at the top of the hill with one or two friends for company, and she never had an off step. And just last week, when Frankie came for Maddie’s regular trim, she got the go-ahead for regular turn out back in the big fields with her old herd. Immediately after he gave us the news, the girls put Maddie back out with her crew – she whinnied and cantered off to rejoin the group, and it was if she’d never been gone. A huge thank you to Frank, whose expertise and endless amounts of patience have enabled Maddie to run again, on her own feet. Our Miracle Maddie is looking for her forever home – she’s beautiful, sweet, and full of personality – she is an easy keeper (especially now that her feet only need trimmed) and she gets along well with other horses. She LOVES people and loves attention. If you’re interested in adopting or fostering Maddie, please get in touch! With all she’s been through, she deserves a home of her own.
